Friday Favorites: Side Characters

Oh hello, Friday! Aren’t you just a shiny happy little day today? And what’s this? I’m actually remembering to post for my own darn weekly feature? AMAZING! Okay, I’m laying it on kinda thick to shame myself for missing Friday Favorites last week. But let’s just glare at past me for missing the post and then move on. Because this week’s Friday Favorites topic is a fun one!

Side characters tend to really bring stories to life and often I find myself more enamored with them over main characters *coughSEVROcough*.

Mr. Kindly & Eclipse from The Nevernight Chronicles by Jay Kristoff – I want need a spin-off novel of these two and their banter.

Noah from The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater – Although he is part of the core group, he feels more like a side character for reasons that I won’t talk about due to spoilers. But Noah is the best and I will die on this hill.

Okame from Shadow of the Fox by Julie Kagawa – I will riot if anything tragic befalls my beloved ronin. RIOT!

Cricket from LIFEL1K3 by Jay Kristoff – Smol robot, big sarcasm.

Ella Malikova from Gemina & Obisido by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff – One could argue that Ella is slightly more of a main character than side character, but oh well, this is my list and I do what I want. Ella also does what she wants, which usually involves lots of snark, hacking, and general awesomeness.

Magnus Bane from The Shadowhunter Universe by Cassandra Clare – Magnus feels like a main character because he has the biggest and boldest personality in any of the Shadowhunter books, but with the exception of a few books, he is technically a side character. I can honestly say that I probably would have DNFed a lot of the Shadowhunter books if it weren’t for Magnus.

George Cooper from the Tortall books by Tamora Pierce – King of Thieves and King of my heart.

Sevro Au Barca from Red Rising Saga by Pierce Brown – I don’t think I have the words to describe how awesome Sevro is. He’s more of one of the characters you have to experience for yourself to truly understand the obsessive love we Howlers have for Sevro.

MeLaan from Mistborn Era 2 by Brandon Sanderson – Look, just go read the Mistborn books, okay?

Basically ever side character in the entirety of the Harry Potter Series by JK Rowling – I’m in the process of rereading the Harry Potter books right now and I am remembering how much I love the side characters. Neville, Luna, Professor McGonagall, Lee Jordan, the whole Weasley family (minus Ron, ugh I hate Ron), and just…everyone! Don’t even get me started on the Marauders.

Hi there! I'm Kibby, a 30ish year old book devourer, living in Northern California! When not reading I am writing about demon hunters, rewatching Great British Bake Off and Doctor Who too much, and lamenting over the lack of appreciation for Rogue One. I am also a #bookstagrammer under the IG handle of somethingofthebook.

  1. Fantastic list! Kristoff really kills it with his sarcastic characters, and when combined with Kaufmann it’s just magic. Magical snarky snark. And yay for Tamora Pierce inclusion! George is just lovely.
