Creating and Restoring Wetlands: From Theory to Practice, Second Edition describes the challenges and opportunities relating to the restoration of freshwater and estuarine wetlands in natural, agricultural, and urban environments in the coming century. The ability of created wetlands to function as natural systems has been questioned because most wetlands studied have been new created wetlands instead of old natural wetlands. Quantitative data were needed to verify functional equivalency in wetlands of similar ages. One natural and one created wetland was selected for each of three age classes. An additional natural 'old' wetland was added to ensure a valid comparison. Soils were evaluated for bulk density, pH, moisture content, particle size, carbon, phosphorus content, and nitrogen content.
