Diabetes mellitus is a chronic endocrine disorder of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism characterized by an increase in both fasting and postprandial glucose level and it has been reported to be the major cause of mortality worldwide. There is an alarming projection of 471 million people with the disease by the year 2035. Diabetes is grouped into two forms; type 1, insulin dependent diabetes mellitus and type 2, non- insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. Type 2 is the major form accounting about 90% of cases worldwide. In type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2), postprandial hyperglycemia is important in the development of the disease; Current treatment for Type 2 diabetes remains inadequate so prevention is preferable. The major strategy for the management of Type 2 diabetes is to decrease postprandial hyperglycemia. The α-glucosidase inhibitors, such as acarbose, have been used in the clinic to control blood glucose increase, especially postprandial, in DM2.Herbal medicine is predominantly available for the treatment of diabetes and the main advantages of the use of herbal drugs are effectiveness, safety, and acceptability. The mechanism of action of these medicinal plant of its products involve retarding the absorption of glucose by inhibiting the carbohydrate hydrolyzing enzymes, such as pancreatic amylase and α-glucosidase and through the inhibition of these enzymes, medicinal plants can effectively control the postprandial rise in blood glucose. Several medicinal plants have a high potential in inhibiting α-amylase enzyme activity.Annona muricata (A. muricata) is a tropical plant species belonging to family Annonaceae and known for its many ethnomedicinal uses. All parts of Annona are used in natural medicine in the tropics. It is considered to be a good source of natural antioxidants for various diseases. Traditionally, the leaves are used for headaches, insomnia, cystitis, liver problems, and diabetes, antitumor, anti-inflammatory. The health benefits of this plant have been attributed to their unique phytochemical composition. There is, however, a paucity of information that demonstrates the comparative α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory properties of different extracts and fractions, of the various parts of the plant (fruit-pulp, leaf, stem-bark and root-bark) with relation to its anti-diabetic activity. Hence, the present study was carried out to investigate the comparative α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory potentials of methanolic, ethyl acetate and dichloromethane extracts of the fruit-pulp, leaf, stem-bark and root-bark of Annona muricata and also to determine the possible modes and mechanisms of inhibition of these enzymes by these extracts. The justification for this research is the severe gastrointestinal side effects such as abdominal pain, flatulence and diarrhea that have been reported in the patients after the use of conventional drugs, so that the identification of natural interventions through the use of plants like Annona muricata, becomes beneficial due to their very minimal or absence of negative side effects.

Scientific Essay from the year 2016 in the subject Medicine - Public Health, grade: 1, Egerton University, language: English, abstract: Treatment of diabetes has become relatively efficient with the emergence of nutritional remedies. In the old days, people who suffered from diabetes died, owing to the adverse consequences of the disease conditions because there was no reliable treatment. Thereafter, insulin therapy was initiated and this seemed to alleviate diabetic conditions. Today, there are quite a number of approaches that help to treat diabetes, and one of the most principal approaches is clinical nutrition, in which, diabetic patients are put on a prescribed dietary regime and herbs to regulate blood sugar. Diabetes, which is characterized by polydipsia, polyuria and polyphagia conditions, is posing threat to mankind, although their severity depends on whether one is suffering from Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. Currently, about 6.3% of the U.S population is suffering from diabetes. Globally, it is estimated that 171 million people suffer from the disease (CDC, 2003). As a result, the WHO has turned to nutritional remedies to increase treatment efficacy and reduce cost. To this effect, the question is ‘Does Clinical Nutrition Treat Diabetes Effectively?’ This essay gives an overview on diabetes then focus on alternative therapies, and the role of medicine to support this kind of treatment.

The purpose of this book is to introduce the classified chemical components of hypoglycemic compounds in natural products, summarize the recent research progress of natural products with hypoglycemic activity in the past 20 years, and provide the original analysis and development opinions of relevant scholars. Hypoglycemic compounds are to target diabetes mellitus, an important public health problem, one of four priority noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) targeted for action by world leaders. Diabetes mellitus is a common endocrine and metabolic disease, which not only causes physiological damage to patients' kidneys, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular vessels, peripheral blood vessels, nerves and eyes, but also causes mental and psychological pressure to patients. Due to the evidence that traditional medicine and natural herbal formula have advantages in treating diabetes, natural products with hypoglycemic activity have been studied extensively in recent years and have been accepted by many scholars all over the world. This book focuses on the progress on the study of the structure, hypoglycemic activities, structure-activity relationships and mechanism of a wide range of polysaccharides, flavonoids, saponins, alkaloids, terpenoids, polyphenols and other constituents. It will help students and researchers to understand current approaches and progress in the treatment of diabetes with natural products, which may also be beneficial to develop new hypoglycemic drugs.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the common metabolic disorders and 2.8% of the population suffers from this disease throughout the world and it may cross 5.4% by the year 2025. Herbal medicines have been the highly esteemed source of medicine throughout human history. Plants are widely used today indicating that plants are a growing part of modern, high-tech medicine. The medicinal plants, besides having natural therapeutic values against various diseases and considerable works have been done on these plants to treat DM, describes that the antidiabetic activity of medicinal plants is due to the presence of alkaloid, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, terpenoids, saponins, xantone and other constituents which show reduction in blood glucose levels. Currently available therapeutic options for non-insulin-dependent DM, such as dietary modification, oral hypoglycemics, and insulin, have limitations of their own. The present book covers active natural compounds isolated from medicinal plants that have shown experimental or clinical antidiabetic activity.
