The 6th edition of this established text is streamlined to a more manageable format, with the Appendices moved to the web-site and a significant shortening of the main text. There is a greater focus on the global analysis of industry and competition; and analysis of the internal environment. In consultation with feedback from their adopters, the authors have concentrated on the fundamentals of strategy analysis and the underlying sources of profit. This reflects waning interest among senior executives in the pursuit of short-term shareholder value. As ever students are provided with the guidance they need to strategic planning, analysis of the health services environment (internal and external) and lessons on implementation; with additional discussionssion of organizational capability, deeper treatment of sustainability and corporate social responsibility and more coverageof the sources of organizational inertia and competency traps. This edition is rich in new examples from real-world health care organizations. Chapters are brought to life by the 'Introductory Incidents', 'Learning Objectives', 'Perspectives', 'Strategy Capsules', useful chapter summaries; and questions for class discussion. All cases and examples have been updated or replaced. In this edition the teaching materials and web supplements have been greatly enhanced, with power-point slides, to give lecturers a unique resource.

In 2008, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centers (UPMC) hoisted its logo atop the U.S. Steel Building in downtown Pittsburgh, symbolically declaring that the era of big steel had been replaced by the era of big medicine for this once industrial city. More than 1,200 miles to the south, a similar sense of optimism pervaded the public discourse around the relationship between health care and the future of Houston's economy. While traditional Texas industries like oil and natural gas still played a critical role, the presence of the massive Texas Medical Center, billed as "the largest medical complex in the world," had helped to rebrand the city as a site for biomedical innovation and ensured its stability during the financial crisis of the mid-2000s. Taking Pittsburgh and Houston as case studies, The Medical Metropolis offers the first comparative, historical account of how big medicine transformed American cities in the postindustrial era. Andrew T. Simpson explores how the hospital-civic relationship, in which medical centers embraced a business-oriented model, remade the deindustrialized city into the "medical metropolis." From the 1940s to the present, the changing business of American health care reshaped American cities into sites for cutting-edge biomedical and clinical research, medical education, and innovative health business practices. This transformation relied on local policy and economic decisions as well as broad and homogenizing national forces, including HMOs, biotechnology programs, and hospital privatization. Today, the medical metropolis is considered by some as a triumph of innovation and revitalization and by others as a symbol of the excesses of capitalism and the inequality still pervading American society.

Freddie Steinmark started at safety for the undefeated University of Texas Longhorns in 1969. In the thrilling “Game of the Century,” a come-from-behind victory against Arkansas that ensured Texas the national championship, Steinmark played with pain in his left leg. Two days later, X-rays revealed a bone tumor so large that it seemed a miracle Steinmark could walk, let alone play football. Within a week of the Arkansas game, his leg was amputated. A gritty, undersized player, Steinmark had quickly become a fan favorite at Texas. What he endured during the Longhorns’ memorable 1969 season, and what he encountered afterward, captivated not only Texans but the country at large. Americans watched closely as Steinmark confronted life’s ultimate challenge, and his openness during his battle against savage odds helped reframe the national conversation surrounding cancer and the ongoing race for a cure. Written with unfettered access to the Steinmark family and archives, Freddie Steinmark: Faith, Family, Football is the exploration of a brief but full life, one that began humbly but ended on a grand stage. It is a fitting tribute to a legendary Longhorn whose photograph, emblazoned with the word “Heart,” flashes on the Freddie Steinmark Scoreboard’s Jumbotron prior to each home football game in UT’s Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium at Joe Jamail Field.

This book is primarily a symptom-based guide to Breast and Gynecologic Imaging. Most clinical publications focus on a specific pathology such as "Imaging and/or management of ovarian cancer," but in clinical practice, patients do not present with a diagnosis. Physicians are presented with clinical symptoms, and appropriate use of imaging after a clinical assessment is critical from the point of view of effective intervention to treat a patient. CMS now mandates a clinical decision support system to justify imaging. This is based on making use of appropriate modalities for specific clinical problems that are deemed so by professional society guidelines. In an era of emphasis on cost effective, high quality health care delivery, it is critical for clinicians in training and practice to have a resource that outlines scientifically sound and professional society endorsed criteria for appropriate work up of patients’ symptoms. This book applies this symptom-based approach to women’s health. Authors are focused on providing a scientifically proven resource to gynecologists, obstetricians, radiologists and internists involved in the management of common symptoms affecting women. Each chapter is based on a common breast or gynecological problem and how patients are triaged for imaging. The implications of the findings and the most appropriate management of the patient are also presented. The text focuses on providing the most effective methods currently available to investigate commonly encountered symptoms in women’s health. In addition, there are chapters that outline rationale of screening for breast cancer in women with an average risk and those with an elevated risk for breast cancer as well as a clinician guide to understanding multidisciplinary approach to the Breast cancer patient. This is an ideal guide for gynecologists, obstetricians, radiologists, and internists working in women’s health.
