The Elman Induction is a powerful introduction to rapid hypnotherapy that will help all hypnotists and hypnotherapists quickly attain a better understanding of the art and science of hypnosis. Long forgotten and often overshadowed by interest in Milton Erickson's contribution to hypnotherapy, the work and ideas of his chief rival Dave Elman should not be overlooked. Elman was a former stage hypnotist, radio personality, and worked with the Office of Strategic Services (the predecessor of the CIA) during World War II. He was approached by members of the medical and dental profession, who had an interest in hypnosis but were dissatisfied with what they had learned from Erickson. While many in the hypnotherapy arena regularly shun any association with stage hypnotists, looking at why hypnosis-as-entertainment works and how it may be applied to clinical and performance-related applications is a worthy study. Although Elman was a close associate of Sigmund Freud's son and very much influenced by Freud's psychoanalytic theories, his core concepts have even more relevance when studied and practiced in light of many more recent neurological discoveries. His 3-minute technique is a starting point in understanding the elegance of his thoughts and must be mastered by anyone who claims to practice hypnotherapy. The theories and techniques taught by David Elman to medical doctors and dentists during the last century is about much more than rapid, direct hypnosis. It provides valuable insight into the nature of suggestion and imagination and the art and science of hypnosis. Elman, a radio personality who played a role in the Office of Strategic Services (a precursor of the CIA) during World War II, was a talented stage hypnotist. When several medical doctors had attempted to apply hypnosis in their treatment of patients, they became dissatisfied with the techniques taught to them by Elman's chief rival, who was a psychiatrist who specialized in a permissive approach. Studying Elman gives the student a deep insight into the true nature of hypnosis and its transformative power. Elman's courses began with a basic 3-minute procedure, which I call the Elman Technique. He then required his students to get the same results in less than a minute. Next, he taught them how this could be done even without achieving a trance state. And he taught several pain management techniques to include Hypnotic Coma, which I successfully used to undergo outpatient surgery without sedation. Unfortunately, most courses and books on Elman fail to get past the basic Elman Technique. This volume contains the entire Elman Hypnotherapy: Beyond the Basics series of nine books. Nowadays, the degree and scale of flood hazards has been massively increasing as a result of the changing climate, and large-scale floods jeopardize lives and properties, causing great economic losses, in the inundation-prone areas of the world. Early flood warning systems are promising countermeasures against flood hazards and losses. A collaborative assessment according to multiple disciplines, comprising hydrology, remote sensing, and meteorology, of the magnitude and impacts of flood hazards on inundation areas significantly contributes to model the integrity and precision of flood forecasting. Methodologically oriented countermeasures against flood hazards may involve the forecasting of reservoir inflows, river flows, tropical cyclone tracks, and flooding at different lead times and/or scales. Analyses of impacts, risks, uncertainty, resilience, and scenarios coupled with policy-oriented suggestions will give information for flood hazard mitigation. Emerging advances in computing technologies coupled with big-data mining have boosted data-driven applications, among which Machine Learning technology, with its flexibility and scalability in pattern extraction, has modernized not only scientific thinking but also predictive applications. The violinist Jascha Heifetz (1901-1987) is considered among the most influential performers in history and still maintains a strong following among violinists around the world. Dario Sarlo contributes significantly to the growing field of analytical research into recordings and the history of performance style. Focussing on Heifetz and his under-acknowledged but extensive performing relationship with the Bach solo violin works (BWV 1001-1006), Sarlo examines one of the most successful performing musicians of the twentieth century along with some of the most frequently performed works of the violin literature. The book proposes a comprehensive method for analysing and interpreting the legacies of prominent historical performers in the wider context of their particular performance traditions. The study outlines this research framework and addresses how it can be transferred to related studies of other performers. The investigation is based upon eighteen months of archival research in the Library of Congress’s extensive Jascha Heifetz Collection.
