The early "New Age" philosophy of New Thought, which was wildly popular at the turn of the 20th century, owes much of its emphasis on the concept of "mind over matter" to the works of Thomas Troward. In this two-in-one volume, which brings together two of Troward's celebrated books on "mental science," the author-who was renowned for presenting difficult ideas with clarity and enthusiasm-discusses: . the higher mode of intelligence that controls the lower . the unity of the spirit . the subjective and objective minds . the law of growth . intuition and the will . the subconscious mind . individuality . the creative power of thought . and much more. First published in 1909, Troward's writings remain of immense interest to anyone interesting in personal spiritual development. English judge, philosopher, and painter THOMAS TROWARD (1847-1916) lived most of his life in India, in the service of the imperial monarchy. The "Law" is the laws that govern thought and the forces of nature, the phenomena that we perceive, things that are not flexible. The "Word" is the divine power that creates. In 1917's The Law and the Word, philosopher Thomas Troward reconciles these two concepts in the shadow of the Biblical promise of eternal life for the truly faithful. With a logical, often scientific, always benevolent style, Troward lays out a method for the practical application of spiritual metaphysics. Published a year after the author's death, this work represents the culmination of all his esoteric studies and succeeds in bringing together the spirit and the mind, eventually becoming one of the earliest and best-known foundation stones of modern New Age thought. Everything that happens, happens for a reason-or, more specifically, everything that happens is an effect of some cause that came before. This is the logical progress of physical existence. New Thought pioneer Thomas Troward, in The Creative Process in the Individual, demonstrates not only how this equation applies to all creation, but how it flows from the divine and relates to the metaphysical, as well as where the individual is placed within this schema. Comprehensively considering the spiritual and mundane aspects of such an existential question, Troward, in this 1915 classic, ultimately exposes how the individual can operate in concert with these laws in order to better his existence and more easily meet his spiritual goal: connecting with God. Thomas Troward (1847-1916) was an English author whose works influenced the New Thought Movement and mystic Christianity. Troward was a divisional Judge in British-administered India. His avocation was the study of comparative religion. Influences on his thinking, as well as his later writing, included the teachings of Christ, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism. After his retirement from the judiciary in 1896, Troward set out to apply logic and a judicial weighing of evidence in the study of matters of cause and effect. The philosopher William James characterized Troward's Edinburgh Lectures on Mental Science as "far and away the ablest statement of philosophy I have met, beautiful in its sustained clearness of thought and style, a really classic statement." According to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) archivist Nell Wing, early AA members were strongly encouraged to read Thomas Troward's Edinburgh Lectures on Mental Science. In the opening of the 2006 film The Secret (2006 film), introductory remarks credit Troward's philosophy with inspiring the movie and its production. Troward was a past president of the International New Thought Alliance. (wikipedia.org)

Perhaps the most controversial text ever written, the Bible and its meaning have been argued over since its commitment to paper. With an eye toward keeping the focus on the Bible's great offering-God's promise of everlasting life in His presence-Thomas Troward offers here a concise commentary on major Biblical principles, all the while stressing that faith and accepted scientific conventions are not contradictory but are, in fact, in concert. In doing this, he provides a thorough analytical exploration of major Biblical concepts, such as the fall of man and the role of Satan, and reinforces the roles of compassion and forgiveness as keys to fulfilling man's spiritual potential. Anyone who has found the Bible an intimidating (or worse, confusing) read would benefit greatly from this straightforward and relevant work, first published in 1913. English judge, philosopher, and painter THOMAS TROWARD (1847-1916) lived most of his live in India, in the service of the imperial monarchy. Among his publications, many of which profoundly affected the New Thought movement, are The Law and the Word, The Hidden Power and Other Papers Upon Mental Science, and The Creative Process in the Individual.
