Call Down the Hawk once again proves Maggie Stiefvater is a master of words and dark whimsy. Even with some pacing issues and a lack of pay off, this read is entrancing and exciting.

How do you treat yourself when you finish a project? Book Review Unearthed and Undying by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner Rating: 3 and 2 stars, respectively Full version of these reviews can be found at somethingofthebook.com Unearthed - On the surface, Unearthed has it all: a scrappy scavenger girl with a secret, a nerdy scholar boy WITH A SECRET, and archeology...IN SPACE! It should have sent me all a flutter as I dove into it’s pages (metaphorically, cause I read it via audiobook), but even through the adventure and wickedly cool premise I couldn’t help feeling completely disconnected from the story. Due to the dual POVs, a lot of information was given to us twice, which made it more difficult to follow because I kept thinking my audiobook app was glitching. The characters were just fine, but I wasn't particularly enamored any of them. The planet of Gaia is really interesting and I love the adventure of the story, but overall it was hard to get into this one. Undying - Oh wow, was this just not the right time to be reading this book. Between a virus subplot and my complete lack of focus due to the emerging pandemic, I could not hold any threads of this story. Now, some of that is me, but some of it lands on the story too. I didn't feel any growth from the characters and I just didn't care for the romance. And since the story is based on Earth this time, the intriguing world building from Unearthed is gone. The sad thing about the Undying was it was pretty forgettable for me. I honestly couldn’t tell you how it ended. But the fact of the matter is, if you finish Unearthed, there is a good chance you’ll want to pick up Undying.
